29 October / Penfolds Victoria Derby Day / This is thoroughbred racing at its very best
The $2 million Group 1 Penfolds Victoria Derby headlines the day, with history made by Hitotsu in 2021 and Australia’s most talented young stayers looking to add their name to the honour roll in 2022. The nine-race program at Flemington Racecourse also features the $2 million Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), the pinnacle for three-year-old sprinters that cemented Home Affairs’ position as one of the world’s most valuable colts last year, while the $1 million TAB Empire Rose (1600m) for the fillies and mares will crown the next queen of the turf. The incredible action on the track will be equalled by the fashion attractions around the grounds, with a black and white theme providing fashion colour guidance for ladies, while gentlemen will don their sartorial best featuring their own take on elegant blacks, greys and complementary touches.
1 November / Lexus Melbourne Cup / At 3pm on that famous first Tuesday in November
$8 million Lexus Melbourne Cup takes its rightful place. It is the centrepiece for the entire Melbourne Cup Carnival! Last year the world witnessed a New Zealand-born horse, jockey and trainer take racing’s most treasured prize when Verry Elleegant, trained by Chris Waller and partnered by jockey James McDonald defeated Australian-bred galloper Incentivise and English-trained stayer Spanish Mission. Be at Flemington Racecourse when, yet again, a new chapter is written, another legend born and new dreams come true before your very eyes. The undercard features the Group 3 Darley Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) for two-year-olds and Group 3 The Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m) for mares plus the popular Listed Resimax Group Subzero Handicap (1400m), a race restricted to grey horses.
3 November / Kennedy Oaks Day / Style. Elegance. Sophistication. Beauty all around
There are not enough words to describe the exquisite looks, fashion and racing experiences that make the Kennedy Oaks Day celebrations so renowned. Commonly referred to as “ladies day”, women of all ages come together at Flemington Racecourse to put their best possible look ‘out there’ for all to see, as they don the most creative looks, colours, accessories and millinery. The day’s thrilling racing highlight is the $1 million Group 1 Kennedy Oaks which crowns the nation’s top three-year-old filly. Damien Oliver confirmed his place as one of the greats of the Australian turf when winning the 2021 Kennedy Oaks aboard Willowy. Oliver delivering a record-equalling 126th career Group 1, a feat only matched by the legendary jockey George Moore.
5 November / VRC Champions Stakes Day / The guaranteed good time, with world-class racing the highlight to the final day
The concluding day of the Carnival will feature the illustrious $3 million Group 1 VRC Champions Stakes (2000m), the spring grand final for Australia’s best middle distance horses. The final day of Cup Week also features the $3 million Group 1 Darley Champions Sprint (1200m) which last year saw the Nature Strip fly up the famous Flemington straight for a dominant victory. Will we see the world’s best sprinter return for a fourth attempt at the prestigious dash? Joining the program on VRC Champions Stakes Day is the $3 million Group 1 Kennedy Champions Mile (1600m) for the best of the best over the Flemington mile. A spectacular nine-race program is just the beginning – with endless activities for kids and parents, but also every other kind of race-lover be they young or old. I am a Sydney-based journalist who travelled to the 2018 World Cup with World of Discoveries. Following is my review of that fabulous experience ... What a trip ... the World Cup, five cities, amazing camaraderie, and great tour leadership against the background of one of the globe’s most amazing countries ... Russia. My World Cup tour with World of Discoveries was one of the great experiences of my travel life. The World of Discoveries team provided a wonderful platform with an itinerary both practical and flexible. The local tours in each of the venue cities - Moscow, Kazan, Samara, Sochi and St Petersburg were informative and, importantly, fun. Considering the accommodation pressures created by the huge influx of Cup tourists, the hotels selected by World of Discoveries were more than adequate. Special mention goes to the Grand Hotel Tchaikovsky In St Petersburg. The tour leadership provided by the company was both expert and considerate. Importantly each traveller’s individual enjoyment and safety appeared to be the paramount consideration. This World Cup holiday was meant to be a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience for me but I am now planning for the next Cup. Bring on 2022 in Qatar

I recently toured Qatar during the World Cup with Varya and Mike’s team at World of Discoveries. The experience over three weeks was first class. Varya and her team nailed the detail for every aspect of the trip from planning and booking through to the actual travel, tours, sightseeing, transport, accommodation and ticketing to games. They were always accessible to deal with any issues that arose and went the extra mile to ensure the travelling group was happy, organised and safe. And they throw a mean party. I would not hesitate to recommend World of Discoveries for trips of a lifetime.
