From ancient spice souks to palm-shaped islands and record-breaking architecture, the city’s neighbourhoods offer visitors so much to explore.

Dubai Marina

Popular with locals, residents, and tourists alike, Dubai Marina’s charming waterfronts are lined with skinny condo towers and a growing number of al fresco restaurants that stay open into the wee hours of the night. Pier 7, the Marina’s idea of foodie heaven, hosts seven unique restaurants on each level of the tower that rises from the middle of the pedestrian walk. Here, you’ll catch a stunning view of the Cayan Tower’s iconic twisting profile. Across the Marina, you’ll find Jumeirah Beach Residence (or as the locals know it, JBR), a neighbourhood of apartments conveniently located by one of Dubai’s most popular public beaches. Strolling along the Walk is a great way to take in some graffiti murals and modern art pieces while enjoying a stunning view of the Persian Gulf.

The area around Burj Khalifa has become the city’s new centre of gravity, and is home to many of the newest, most exciting attractions Dubai has to offer. It is a lively area, packed with plenty of hotels and restaurants, and one of the world’s largest shopping centres, Dubai Mall. Stay here for Dubai Opera, The Dubai Fountain – and, of course, the tallest tower in the world, Burj Khalifa. Dinner at Souk Al Bahar, complete with a fountain view, is not to be missed. As well as amazing facilities, the downtown area is also home to the restored historic quarter, Bastakiya as well as the popular wild wadi waterpark. Great option for first-time visitors who want to experience Dubai in its entirety.

Bur Dubai

Located along the south bank of Dubai Creek, Bur Dubai is home to the majority of Dubai’s important historical attractions. Here you can walk through the city’s last remaining historic neighbourhoods, formerly known as the Bastakiya Quarter. The labyrinth of lanes, built in the early 1900s by wealthy textile and pearl merchants from Bastak, Iran, offer a glimpse into the once-sleepy seaport of old-world Dubai. Meander the narrow, winding alleyways past sand-coloured buildings topped with wind towers — the traditional AC of the Middle East. Wander deeper through the lanes to discover museums, shops, cafes, and galleries aplenty. Within easy reach, you’ll also find a handful of historic mosques and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, a place for visitors to get a better understanding of the culture and customs of the UAE. By then, you’ll have worked up an appetite — satisfy your hunger with an authentic dinner at one of the many nearby Arabic, Moroccan, and Lebanese restaurants.

Dubai Design District

Dubai Design District, better known as d3, seemed to pop out of nowhere and go on to become one of the coolest neighbourhoods in Dubai. As the name suggests, here you’ll find a destination dedicated to all things design, fashion, and the arts. From runway shows to concerts and pop-up exhibits, the area is a bustling hub for creatives of the region. Grab a coffee and check out the numerous public art and design installations, or head to a nearby gallery to explore the latest exhibit. To cap off the day, take in Dubai’s stylish citizens while dining al fresco at one of the district’s many unique restaurants.

Deira (Dubai Creek)

Visiting Deira is like stepping back in time. Located on the northern bank of the Dubai Creek, the small port was historically the commercial centre of Dubai due to its convenient location along trade routes. The recent development of areas further down the coast have dimmed Deira’s commercial importance, but the neighbourhood stays true to its origins of days gone by. The Dubai Creek area feels different from any other place in the city — namely due to the lack of neck-craning skyscrapers in the immediate area. Instead, traditional wooden boats (abras) ferry passengers across the creek. There, the rustic streets of the Gold and Spice Souks await. Whether you’re in the market for fine jewelry, exotic spices, or a shawl in every colour, you’ll find all that and more at these traditional Arab markets. Take some time to wander the stalls, and don’t be afraid to haggle a little. (This is a local’s guide, remember?) Feeling like something new? Sample some camel’s milk or an Arabic coffee, both commonly enjoyed in the UAE.

The Palm Jumeirah

The Palm Jumeirah, one of the world’s largest man-made islands, is one of the city’s most recognizable regions. The palm-shaped island and its 17 fronds are mainly a self-contained residential district which is closed to visitors, but a ride on the monorail will take you down the trunk and the Atlantis hotel, giving epic views of shallow lagoons and private villas along the way. Hop off once you’ve hit the pink arches of Atlantis and you’ll find plenty of fine-dining hotspots, beach clubs, luxury spas, and unparalleled views of the Persian Gulf from the boardwalk.

Al Barsha

One of the poshest areas in Dubai, Al Barsha is also known for Mall of the Emirates and other high-end boutiques and fashion shops. It surely is a shopper’s paradise. This lovely neighborhood also has several of the best attractions in Dubai like Tranquil Al Barsha Pond Park and Dubai Miracle Garden. A perfect “home base” for those looking to explore the city, this area is popular for both visitors and locals alike. Walk around its modern streets, try out the best dishes from their world-class restaurants, or just shop until you drop. Al Barsha is one of the top places with some of the best hotels in Dubai for tourists, and it’s not a mystery why.

Travelled on the TransMongolian Railway in Feb/Mar. Not too cold. Just take usual ski gear. Great scenery. Organisation was absolutely excellent. Every transfer and every guide were on time. The hotels were all very good. The Russian Sim (provided by the company) was great for keeping in contact with each other and the support line.

Super well organized, transfers were always on time, hotels were good, we couldn’t ask for a more responsible tour guide, Phillip was awesome and in care of every little detail to make us feel like at home, would recommend the company with no hesitation at all!

I am a Sydney-based journalist who travelled to the 2018 World Cup with Discovery Russia, the sister company of World of Discoveries. Following is my review of that fabulous experience ... What a trip ... the World Cup, five cities, amazing camaraderie, and great tour leadership against the background of one of the globe’s most amazing countries ... Russia. My World Cup tour with Discovery Russia was one of the great experiences of my travel life. The Discovery Russia team provided a wonderful platform with an itinerary both practical and flexible. The local tours in each of the venue cities - Moscow, Kazan, Samara, Sochi and St Petersburg were informative and, importantly, fun. Considering the accommodation pressures created by the huge influx of Cup tourists, the hotels selected by Discovery Russia were more than adequate. Special mention goes to the Grand Hotel Tchaikovsky In St Petersburg. The tour leadership provided by the company was both expert and considerate. Importantly each traveller’s individual enjoyment and safety appeared to be the paramount consideration. This World Cup holiday was meant to be a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience for me but I am now planning for the next Cup. Bring on 2022 in Qatar!

I was extremely satisfied with my trip. Everyone at the agency have been courteous and helpful from the very beginning, trying to organize our 17 day World Cup experience. The guides and drivers are very professional and friendly, and the accommodations were simply superb. I highly recommend World of Discoveries as I know they will turn your trip into an unforgettable experience.

Thanks you Abby and Varvara and all the other staff members of World of Discoveries for making our stay in Russia over 2 and a half weeks easy, comfortable and memorable. Thanks for the great organisation with transfers and accommodation. Thanks also for organising a phone sim card for each one in our group. It made our life much easier to stay in touch with each other and with our family and friends back home. We loved our stay in Russia and will certainly come back soon.
